As a Service parent whose child has been identified as having special educational needs, you should seek advice from your LEA., and we strongly recommend that it is in your child's best interest to be registered with SCE (UK). This is because in advance of any posting we can liaise with the receiving authority (UK and overseas) to ascertain that any special educational needs can be met.
Criteria for Registering.
The current criteria for registration with SCE (UK) is as follows:
1. A child undergoing statutory assessment.
2 A child with a statement.
3 A child with a note in lieu.
4 A child with sensory or physical impairment.
5 A child in a special school in the UK.
6. A child whose needs cannot be met overseas.
It should be noted that a child whose needs are being met by an individual education plan (IEP) may also be registered at parental request.
Benefits of Registering your Child with SCE (UK)
1. Advice on the provision of special educational needs in the UK and overseas.
2. Liaison on behalf of yourself with local education authorities, and Service personnel staffs.
3. Guidance on your rights regarding the Education Act.
4. Provision of escorts for children registered with SCE (UK) when travelling to and from overseas on school holidays, and one extra half-term flight per year in addition to the 3 annual school children's visit flights.
5. Escort service for your child between school and airport.
6. Special allowances and in some cases travel at public expense for case conferences, interviews and, in certain circumstances, accompanying you child on school children's visits flights.
7. Advice and confirmation of eligibility, in certain circumstances, to draw the Special Educational Needs Allowance (SENA).
